HAB Girls Speak at Model United Nations Conference in Prague
Six HAB girls will be attending a three-day online Model United Nations conference in Prague this Friday-Sunday, to discuss topics relating to women, human rights and security.
Model United Nations brings together students from around the world to simulate real UN committees and discussions.
The conference in Prague this weekend has been organised by Park Lane International School in the Czech Republic and will focus on issues relating to ‘Achieving Equality’. Around 200 students from across the world will attend.
The HAB delegation from Year 10 has been busy researching the countries they have been assigned to represent by the organisers. Each student has prepared a file on the country they are speaking for, including learning what is happening there and how real UN treaties affect citizens.

Politics, international relations and history
The Model United Nations Club at HAB was started by history teacher Ms Leontiou who took part in the Model United Nations programme herself when she was at secondary school in Cyprus.
“It’s a great opportunity to practice debating and teamworking skills and learn how to present your arguments persuasively,” she says. “As a student I got to attend Model United Nations conferences in Vienna and Geneva and it’s really helped me in my university and teaching career.”
Now HAB girls are going to have the same opportunity. “Each conference must agree and write resolutions at the end, with the best one from each conference being presented to the United Nations itself,” adds Ms Leontiou.
Full programme of sessions
Although the conference is online, the event follows a UN code with students expected to dress formally and speak through the chair in the third person. The conference runs from Friday to Sunday with a full programme of sessions each day.
Our delegates are looking forward to the challenge. “'It will help me explore new themes and introduce me to how different countries handle different problems,” says Rawan.
Imani agrees: I’m very keen to have knowledge about international peace and security regarding the citizens of countries around our world', she says.
Norhan believes the conference will provide “great opportunities for developing leadership skills whilst also being a place to practise public speaking, research, and teamwork.”
We look forward to giving you a full report on the conference after the event.
