“Speak Out” Challenge and Schools’ Mace Debate - Report
This was a busy week for Year 10 students at HAB, with both the Jack Petchey “Speak Out” Challenge and the Schools’ Mace Online Debate taking place.
On Tuesday 15th of November, 28 students from Year 10 took part in the Jack Petchey Speak “Speak Out” Challenge at the Harris Academy Theatre. Students spent the entire day learning, practising and refining their public speaking skills.
After a day of preparation, each student bravely spoke in front of an audience for 90 seconds about a topic they were passionate about - ranging from 'why pigeons should be killed', to exposing 'ethnocentric beauty standards'.
We are hugely #ProudToBeHAB of each student. At the end of the day, six winners were announced: Noor, Esther, Fatima, Davinia, Radiyat and Simileoluwa. Well done!
“This house would ban the sale and consumption of meat”
Then on Thursday 17th of November, Lina, Fatima, Hawah, Darine and Radiyat debated against St Michael’s Catholic College in the Schools' Mace Online Debate competition. The HAB team proposed the motion “This house would ban the sale and consumption of meat”.
Each student received personalised individual feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their debate, with comments such as:
- Organisation was good with clear signposting and gave the speech a good structure
- Good chain of logic for examples
- Good and relevant examples used
- Good engagement with audience questions
- Structure lends itself to close analysis and high marks
- Excellent speaker who spoke with confidence and flare, and made great use of tone of voice
Our debating team is pictured below preparing for their debate. Unfortunately, HAB were not selected to go on to compete in the next stage of the competition but we are extremely #ProudToBeHAB of our students.
