Words for Work: Women in Leadership Project
On Wednesday, Lancôme and the National Literacy Trust hosted an amazing citizenship day for Harris students as part of the Words for Work: Women in Leadership project.
The aim of the project is to tackle gender inequality in the workplace and help our students see themselves as the leaders of tomorrow.
A group of fourteen lucky HAB6 students attended the event. The day gave them the opportunity to talk to people about their career pathways and explore the different careers available within the beauty industry. Over the course of the day, students attended a range of fabulous activities:
- A seminar hosted by leaders at Lancome
- A guided tour around the offices
- Speed networking
- A speech writing workshop
Jennifer really enjoyed the day and said it was "a great exercise to practice your speaking and listening skills. Networking felt nerve-wracking at the beginning, but it becomes more natural after time".
Serena thought the day was a good opportunity to empower young women. "It helped to open our eyes to the jobs and opportunities that are available to us," she said, "and challenge the perception that such roles are male dominated."
Nhan thought the day was great for building confidence. "We celebrated women from different backgrounds and different body types," she said. "They had the chance to share their thoughts and feelings in a space where there was no judgement."
Sweatha described the day as "fantastic, fun and fabulous" because it "allowed me to develop a sense of pride in being a woman. The speeches were especially inspiring!"
Lilly said that day was inspiring and insightful. "It was really helpful to see all of the different career pathways people have followed to get into the industry," she said. "Everyone here comes from a different background, not everyone did a degree. Internships and apprenticeships are now definitely in my mind as options for the future."
