Author Catherine Johnson Inspires HAB Authors
We recently welcomed Catherine Johnson to the academy library where she delivered three creative writing workshops.
As the author of Freedom, the text Year 7 are reading in their English lessons, Catherine is a bit of a celebrity at HAB! The students had lots of questions to ask her about her books, her career and her writing process.
During the workshops, students created new names for a host of entertaining topics: a newly discovered planet, a rather old dog and a brand-new colour! Then they used a selection of intriguing objects - a passport, an envelope that is yellow and worn, a pair of eyelashes - to inspire their own writing. With each object, Catherine imparted a piece of writing advice for our budding authors: nothing will be perfect first time and that's ok, practice your writing skills just like you would an instrument, lead with action!
What students said...
The students thoroughly enjoyed Catherine's creative writing workshops!
Rudayna said: "The session was really interesting and inspiring. I now have ideas about how to begin a piece of creative writing. I'm going to practise my creative writing at home!"
Precious said: "I love English and want to be a writer. This session has helped me see that I can achieve my ambitions because everyone can be a writer if you put in enough effort and time!"
Saeda said: "I really enjoyed the workshop. At school we do creative writing, but the teacher always tell us what to write about. In today's session we could write about anything we wanted and I really liked that freedom!"
