Geography Field Trip to Walton-on-the-Naze
Eighty-six excited Geography students from Harris Academy Bermondsey went to Walton-on-the-Naze on the Essex coast earlier this month to complete their physical geography fieldwork.
They were there to investigate to what extent the coastal management strategies were successfully protecting the coastline.
Fieldwork is an integral part of the Geography GCSE and helps geographers learn the skills to investigate the world. Students were amazing on the day and took on the challenge with great resilience, battling the incoming tide to complete their beach profiles and longshore drift analyses before the beach disappeared.
Students learned how to use clinometers to measure beach angles and how to test the strength of longshore drift with oranges. They shared opinions in the environmental quality survey and were studiously counting waves to assess whether the incoming tides were constructing (building) or destroying the beach in two different locations.
The smiles on the faces show that sometimes hard work can be fun!
