HAB6 present at Media Tech Women's Event hosted by News UK
For International Women's Day 2024 HAB6 students participated in a transformative experience at the Media Tech Women's Event hosted by News UK. The event, held on the amazing 17th event floor of News Uk’s central London office, brought together the BBC, SKY and News corporations and served as a platform for celebrating women's contributions to the tech industry and fostering dialogue about inclusivity, equality and diversity in organisations and the technology sector.
Ainara, Sheryl, and Samantha, representing HAB6, together with Dr Elsden, took centre stage at the conference to share their insights and experiences of taking part in workshops and outreach work with News UK. This was delivered in speeches to the audience of over 200, plus thousands online as it was live-streamed on the BBC. The students recounted a remarkable trip organised between HAB and the News UK team aimed at encouraging more girls to pursue careers in technology. The students were captivated by discussions on innovative teamwork and creating news apps, which highlighted revolutionary methods of news delivery and showcased how technology is far more than working in isolation and coding.
The conference provided a unique opportunity for students to learn from the journeys of industry facilitators, gaining valuable insights into the tech landscape and the routes into it. Their participation sparked enthusiasm amongst attendees, with many expressing a newfound interest in pursuing careers in technology.
Speaking about the Media Tech Women’s event, "One standout moment for me was the chance to network with other women in tech," said Sheryl, a student studying music tech. "It was a wonderful experience to take part in the event at News UK. Not only did we learn about cutting-edge technology and innovation, but meeting other women in tech and sharing our experiences was incredibly inspiring," Sheryl remarked.
Reflecting on the event, Ainara expressed her excitement about the potential opportunities ahead as a result of presenting and working with News UK, stating, "This experience has opened windows of opportunities for us. We now feel empowered and motivated to explore careers in technology, with News UK being a promising prospect for our future options. We also met Suki Fuller, [Computer Weekly’s most influential woman in tech 2023] a renowned figure in the tech industry and she gave us advice and left a big impression on me”.
The Media Tech Women's Event at News UK not only celebrated the achievements of women in technology but also inspired the next generation of female tech leaders, and all women, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.
The event serves as a testament to the importance of fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry and workplace, paving the way for a more equitable and innovative future.
It was also HAB’s way to say ‘thank you’ to News for the amazing opportunities the partnership and outreach work has facilitated. As Dr Elsden said in her speech on the day, the partnership with News Uk helps with one of HAB’s core aims of enabling all our girls to leave feeling they are able to flourish and ‘conquer the city’.
