Year 10 Reading Challenge: Building Stamina for Future Success
Last week, our Year 10 students attended a Library lesson to launch this term's exciting Year 10 Reading Challenge. During the session, students explored the five most popular career choices, as voted for by HAB students: doctor, lawyer, financial analyst, engineer, and software developer. They discovered how much each profession typically earns, the qualifications required to enter the field, and the hours of independent reading needed to achieve these qualifications.
Through this exploration, students realised that developing strong reading stamina is essential for achieving their dream careers. They learnt that many high-paying professions demand years of study and a commitment to reading-intensive qualifications.
Juweyria reflected: "I think that the highest-paid jobs require good GCSEs, many years of studying, and hours of reading."
Leana shared: "This activity has taught me about the importance of reading stamina, as it is crucial for me to read quickly and efficiently in order to achieve one of the top-paying jobs I am aiming for."
Reichel added: "If someone finds it difficult to concentrate on reading now, when they start training for their career it will be challenging. To help prepare for my future careers, I need to improve my reading stamina."
To support students in building their reading stamina, we have launched the Year 10 Reading Challenge. This challenge encourages students to read a diverse range of books, introducing them to various genres, historical periods, and imaginative universes. By broadening their reading horizons, students will develop the skills and resilience needed for both academic and professional success.
Rewards for the Reading Challenge
To motivate our students, we are offering fantastic prizes for those who rise to the challenge:
- Bronze Award: Read 3 books to receive a sweet treat, a certificate, and 2 HABit credits.
- Silver Award: Read 6 books to earn a sweet treat, a certificate, a bookmark, and 3 HABit credits.

- Platinum Award: Read 12+ books to enjoy a sweet treat, a certificate, a bookmark, a book from the prize trolley, 5 HABit credits, and breakfast with the Principal.
We encourage all students to embrace this challenge, discover the joy of reading, and take meaningful steps towards their future aspirations. Let’s work together to build a love of reading and prepare for a bright future!
