HAB's First Student Government Launched
Jeriel, Year 12, reports on the introduction of HAB's first student parliament - why we've started one and who is involved.
A government is a system of people who have a certain degree of authority over a community. In British society, we have a government consisting of a Prime Minister, The Cabinet, Ministers, Civil Servants and local government – the council. Separate from this; however, we also have Parliament – made up of the House of Commons and House of Lords – who look at what the government is doing.
Likewise, HAB will be implementing a structure similar to Parliament in school. The HAB government will be formed of seven departments, which are:
- The department of careers and guidance
- The department of culture and inclusion
- The department for environment, food and rural affairs
- The department for health and welfare
- The ministry of justice and behaviour
- The department of charities and events
- The department of curriculum
It is incredibly important to have a government or a similar organisation in an educational setting as it will make students feel included, represented and heard. I think it’s wonderful that HAB is introducing this and I, like many other students, am looking forward to seeing the changes that HAB MPs will put in place.

Congratulations to all of the students who have taken a role in the HAB government, both MPs and Members of the Cabinet!
“I think that student voice is important because everything that we do in the Academy must serve their purpose," said Ms Senior. "HAB government is a place where students are able to provide feedback on current policies and influence future plans, within every remit of their academic, social and personal life here at HAB; it makes for a stronger community.”
The HAB Parliament is...
“By the students for the students; encouraging collegiality and interest in their community.”
