Poet Sophia Thakur Helps Students Explore Feelings Through Verse
Kadira, Year 12, writes about a poetry workshop for Year 12 at Harris Academy Peckham, led by poet Sophia Thakur.
On Friday 3rd March, I went to Harris Academy Peckham where I attended an International Women’s Day poetry workshop. It was led by the brilliant poet, Sophia Thakur (pictured below left). During the event, she promoted her new book titled Wearing My Mother’s Heart and we were all given a free copy!
The first half of the event was a Q&A with Sophia Thakur and several high-achieving women from different industries. Students were also able to contribute and ask questions. "I liked how we heard from a poet’s point of view on what’s it is like to go into poetry and the process of it," said Paris, Year 12.
In the second half of the workshop, we had to write a poem about our friends (usually the person sitting next to you). I found this section fascinating as we heard how our friends view us, through the power of poetry.
This workshop was very beneficial as I learnt what a poet’s job consists of but also how to express my thoughts and feelings through poetry.
