Penguin Careers Workshop - Report by Paris, Year 12
Paris, Year 12, reports on a recent careers workshop at HAB with employees from Penguin.
During the workshop with staff from Penguin we explored the book How to Save It published by Merky Books. The purpose of workshop was to see what different careers are available within publishing, including editorial, design, marketing, digital advertising and distribution.
How to Save It is about saving money and each group was assigned a task in the publishing process. I was in the digital development team, and we had to produce a way to promote the book online. We created a game for people to use whilst reading the book. The online game included making sprites and completing quizzes. The game encourages you to read a book of your choice but if you don’t read for a period of time, your tokens are taken.
“As I was part of the publishing team, it was interesting to know how companies go about promoting books," said Kadira, Year 12.
At the end of the workshop each group presented their ideas. The Penguin volunteers were really impressed with all of the presentations but I’m pleased say our team won, earning each of us a tote bag.
Everyone in the workshop also received a free copy of How To Save It! I enjoyed the workshop; it was nice to work as a publisher for the morning, especially with Penguin.
