Isabella, Year 12, is Highly Commended in Schools Laureate Poetry Prize
Congratulations to Isabella, Year 12, on her Highly Commended poetry translation entry for the 2023 Schools Laureate Prize.
Isabella translated the poem Canção do Exílio (The Exiles Song), originally written by Gonçalves Dias in Brazilian Portuguese.
Isabella's translation has reached the hearts and minds of this year's judges and has celebrated the bicentenary of Gonçalves Dias' birth in a true patriotic spirit. You can read the original and Isabella's translation below.
The Stephen Spender Schools Laureate Prize is an annual prize for poetry in translation, with categories for pupils, teachers and individual young people in the UK and Ireland, as well as an open category for adults from all over the world. Click HERE to see the prize winners.
