HAB Welcomes National Space Academy
As British Science Week approaches, we eagerly welcomed the National Space Academy to HAB for an engaging series of workshops focused on space exploration and STEM careers.
Students in Year 9 and Year 10 had the opportunity to participate in workshops tailored to their level. Teachers nominated students who embodied the values of HAB, giving them the chance to take part in hands-on activities.
In the Year 10 workshop, students delved into the realm of asteroids. They built hydrogen fuel rockets designed to divert potential Earth-bound asteroids. Additionally, they constructed their own hovercrafts and engaged in friendly battles using principles of momentum.
Meanwhile, Year 9 students embarked on a journey to the moon with the Artemis and Beyond workshop. They constructed rockets using concepts of forces and gas pressure to simulate lunar travel. The workshop also featured a space suit demonstration, with Naimh stylishly modelling it, highlighting the risks and precautions associated with space exploration.
The day was a hit, with students showcasing their passion for science and asking thought-provoking questions, such as the possibility of alien life. Fascinatingly, they learnt that chemicals released by oceanic fish have been detected beyond Earth in our solar system.
With the success of these workshops, we eagerly anticipate future collaborations with the National Space Academy, as students continue to explore the wonders of science and space.
