Year 8’s Exciting Library Activity: Blind Date with a Book
This week, Year 8 students have been enjoying a fantastic time in the Library with a fun and engaging activity: "Blind Date with a Book." We’ve all heard the saying "never judge a book by its cover," and this week, Year 8 had the chance to put that advice into practice – by judging books based on their opening lines!
A wide variety of excellent books were selected, wrapped in paper to hide the covers, and the first line of each book was written on the front. Students took their time reading these intriguing opening lines, thinking about the authors' language choices, how the lines made them feel, and what they could learn about the book from just one sentence.
At the end of the lesson, the students eagerly unwrapped their chosen books to discover whether the cover matched the appeal of the opening line. Interestingly, many students found that the cover wasn’t always as captivating as the first line!
Year 8’s top tip for all readers: Judge a book by its opening line, not its cover!
