HAB Year 8 Mandarin Students Explore Contemporary Chinese Cinema at BFI Mandarin Study Day
On 29 January 2025, our Year 8 Mandarin students attended the sold-out BFI Mandarin Study Day at BFI Southbank, where they explored themes of family, culture, and modernity in Chinese cinema.
From 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, students analysed key films like Please Vote for Me (2007) and One Bucket (2019), discussing topics such as family dynamics, travel, and technology in modern China. These films offered valuable insights into the country’s evolving identity, blending tradition with modernity.
In the afternoon, students watched a full-length screening of a recent Chinese film, which brought the themes to life and enriched their understanding of both language and culture.
The day was so enjoyable that students are already eager for a repeat experience. This exciting experience not only broadened their knowledge of China today but also deepened their connection to Mandarin through the power of cinema.
