Year 8 Students Explore Tower Bridge for Young City Poets Project
On Thursday 30th January, Ms Morris and Ms McGing took a group of Year 8 students to Tower Bridge.
In the morning, students went on a guided tour around Tower Bridge. During the tour, they learnt about the science behind the pump room, explored the stories of the people who made Tower Bridge and discovered information about the historical context of this legendary landmark.
Enas wants to extend our thanks to Nat, Isabel and David from Tower Bridge for being such knowledgeable guides!
This event was arranged by The National Literacy Trust as part of their ‘Young City Poets’ programme. As part of the project, the students have explored the power of poetry in the Academy Library and will use their experience at Tower Bridge to create their own poems!
The final part of the project will be an author visit from Paul Cree who will run a poetry writing workshop at HAB to help students develop their creative writing skills.
After lunch, students explored a range of resources from the Tower Bridge archives and began developing ideas for their poems
Nevaeh-Lee said, ‘I enjoyed walking along the glass walk way at the top of Tower Bridge but be warned, the stairs to get to the top are tiring!’
Arissa said, 'I enjoyed going to Tower Bridge and taking photos of the views . . the trip was really fun.'
Nevaeh said, 'Today was amazing because of the poetry and the learning opportunities.'
Zizi said, 'Today was really inspiring and educational. We learnt about the history and the inner workings of Tower Bridge,'
Saeda explained, 'The greatest thing about the Tower Bridge trip was the history!'
Zoe shared, 'I enjoyed today because it was a day full of learning, but it didn’t seem that way, as I was also able to enjoy music and spend time with my friends. The general quality of learning on the day was amazing. We were able to get a good grip of how the bridge worked because of Nat’s explanations and demonstrations.'
Alishaba said “I liked today’s trip because the view was really calming. I learned lots of information, like how the engines controlled the opening and closing of the bridge. I was shocked to find out that there was once a bus drive who jumped across the bridge as the bascules were opening!'
