HAB Girl Wins GOLD in Chemistry Olympiad
Year 13 Chemistry student, Sara, has won a Gold Medal in the UK's leading chemistry competition for Post 16 students, putting her in the top 1% of students nationwide.
The UK Chemistry Olympiad, organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, is the leading chemistry competition at Key Stage 5.
The content is far beyond that of the A Level specification, requiring problem-solving skills and a creative flair to apply fundamental chemistry principles to real-world situations. Schools enter their brightest students, indeed only the top 10% of A Level pupils complete the first stage of the competition.
Securing a Gold Medal in Round 1, puts Sara in the top 4% of all entries and the uppermost 1% of chemistry students in the UK. This is a phenomenal achievement for Sara who competed with pupils from both the state and independent sectors across the UK. Sara won a Silver award in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge in July last year and has offers to study chemistry at UCL, KCL, University of Bath & University of Surrey in September.
We are incredibly proud of Sara, the first student in the Harris Federation to win Gold in this prestigious competition. She is an exceptional chemist and she has set a high standard for future HAB Chemists!
