HAB Poets Inspired By St Paul's Cathedral
Some of our young poets had the chance to develop their skills through an annual project called Young City Poets, run by HAB with the National Literacy Trust.
As part of the project, girls visit a famous cultural venue in London and then use the visit to inspire poetry. This year, Ms Morris and a group of fabulous Year 8 students took part in the project and visited St Paul's Cathedral.
Before the visit, girls took part in a writing workshop in the library with Ms Morris, where they developed their understanding of metaphors and conceits
They then visited St Paul’s Cathedral, exploring the site and gathering inspiration for their own poetry. Students impressed the guides leading the tour and wowed them with their profound poems. Some of the poems are even going to be put on display at St Paul's so members of the public can enjoy the poetry written by students!
In the final part of the project, famous poet Paul Cree came to the school to help students develop their poetry skills further. The HAB students worked in small groups to produce some moving poems about emotions.
Below you can read two of the poems inspired by the project.

Come Into the Entrance
By Fathia, Year 8
Come into the entrance and see the marble font, look deep into the clear water and see its worn concave surface scrubbed clean to welcome a new born soul into a life full of hardship and joy.
The colourful and dizzying iris of god looks down upon us - seeing all things from the future to the past - omnipresent from heaven, earth and places beyond our universe, beyond our understanding.
As I walk through the ocean of life, I feel confused and scared seeing the end coming closer and closer with every step I take.
Although I may feel this way, life is an art work and all paintings must come to an end, memories will live with it for the rest of eternity.
Fascination
By Sali, Shania and Fathia, Year 8
Fascination is…
Staring into the eyes of a newly born fox
Watching fireworks rise into the sky
Wondering why my dreams fade like the memories of a summer day
There's no order in fascination
It depends on your mood, the day and how high your discombobulation is
Waffles are better than pancakes
That’s all I think about
Monday to Sunday
As you stare in the dark abyss of the sea,
Thinking of the marine life yet to be discovered.
Fascination is the thought of what is above us?
There is no order in fascination
It depends on our mood and mind, or sometimes even in time
Fascination isn't something you feel everyday
It jumps in and out of your mind
Like the fox you see in darling silver nights
Why do the brave knights sound like the dark cool nights
Fascination is a lingering question that travels
through human minds
