The Natural Hair Whisperer visits HAB
This academic year we have made a conscious effort to #SaluteOurSisters and celebrate Black British icons within the local community.
Bama, who is also known as 'The Natural Hair Whisperer' spoke to a group of students from Year 7-9 discussing how they felt about their natural hair and created an open space where students could share their personal experiences.
Bama is on a mission to change the narrative around coarse hair. The workshop centred on encouraging students to embrace their natural hair and feel confident with how to maintain and style it. Bama said: “Our hair is our history and I loved seeing their faces light up."
Bama also delivered a live demo which featured the 5 Pillars of Natural hair; this outlined how to retain moisture and hair length and the correct steps on how to wash and condition hair.
"I want to thank Bama for teaching me how to cherish my hair and take good care of it," said one Year 9 student.
Miss Mbuyamba said: “This is racial equity in practice. All students deserve to be and feel seen. Through this workshop students were able to be vulnerable, honest and leave with tips on how to maintain their hair. It was lovely to see their enthusiasm and engagement, I wish had this when I was their age! Black History Month should be an opportunity to celebrate and uplift students, this workshop did just that."
