Harris Academy Bermondsey at Thorpe Park
In October, Year 8 and 9 students from Harris Academy Bermondsey had the exciting opportunity to join 10,000 other pupils at Thorpe Park for STEAM 2024, an event organised by ACS International Schools. With fun and educational workshops across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, the day brought learning to life, sparking creativity and innovation.
Students participated in interactive workshops led by over 50 partner organisations. From coding challenges to engineering projects, they explored how classroom knowledge translates into real-world careers in fields like robotics, digital design, and sustainability. Throughout the day, they earned ‘stamps’ in their passports, which gained them a Fastrack pass for the park’s rollercoasters. Krisa (favourite rollercoaster: The Walking Dead) found the Pirbright Institute workshop fascinating: “I learned that scientists are changing the physical structure of mosquitos so they can’t carry diseases as far.”
The inclusion of art highlighted the importance of creativity alongside technical skills. Natalia (favourite rollercoaster: Nemesis) said, “I love musical theatre, so I went to the makeup workshop run by cast members from ‘Cats the Musical’. Learning about career paths where STEM and art overlap was inspiring.”
Hawa, who was propelled from 0 to 80 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds on her favourite rollercoaster, Stealth, reflected on what else she enjoyed once back on the ground: "I learnt how to measure things by using scales and I was confident to introduce myself in English to the workshop leader."
At Harris Academy Bermondsey, we know events like STEAM 2024 are invaluable for nurturing interest in these subjects. Miss Kelly, Head of Year 9 (favourite rollercoaster: Hyperion), who organised the trip, remarked, “We aim to inspire the next generation of girls to confidently occupy those spaces where women have historically been underrepresented.” With STEAM driving future careers, opportunities like this help prepare our students for success in an ever-evolving world.
