Young City Poets Project: A Day of Creativity and Inspiration!
On Thursday, 6th February, HAB was thrilled to welcome writer and performer Paul Cree to the Library as part of the Young City Poets project! With his dynamic storytelling and passion for poetry, Paul inspired our students to explore their creativity and develop their poetry writing skills in exciting new ways.
During the author workshop, Paul captivated the audience by performing one of his own poems—an evocative piece exploring themes of family, music, and finding your voice when you're the youngest at the table. Students were drawn in by his clever use of refrain, colloquial language, and vivid metaphors, which sparked their enthusiasm for crafting their own poetry.
Inspired by Paul's writing, students embarked on a journey of imagination. They selected a place or object important to them and created unique character profiles—bringing everyday items to life. What would Tower Bridge sound like if it could talk? Would the 78 bus be upbeat and optimistic, or cantankerous and grumpy? With these ideas in mind, students wrote their own poems, transforming familiar sights into compelling characters with distinct personalities and voices.
The creativity in the room was electric! Neveah took us through the life of her shoelaces, contemplating the meaning of existence. Goldie highlighted the wear and tear endured by the humble student diary, while Ugo vividly captured the struggles and adventures of the 78 bus. Each poem brought something fresh and exciting to the table, reflecting the incredible imagination of our students.
Now, with their poems nearing completion, students are eagerly preparing them for publication and performance. They are ready to share their voices with the world—and we can’t wait to hear them!
The poems are not ready for publication yet but will prepare a new post once they'd done so we can share some of them.
