Chinese New Year Assemblies and Workshops a Hit with Students at HAB
In celebration of the Chinese New Year this year (January 29, 2025, the Year of the Snake), students at HAB recently enjoyed a series of exciting assemblies led by Year 7, Year 8, and Year 13 Mandarin students. For many of the student presenters, it was their first time taking the stage to lead an assembly, but they rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and dedication.
The young presenters, having worked hard with two rehearsals, introduced their peers to the rich traditions of the Chinese New Year, showcasing not only their Mandarin skills but also their passion for sharing cultural knowledge. The assemblies, which were held for Year 7 through Year 10 and Sixth Form students, were a hit with the whole school.
The event featured interactive elements, including a lively quiz session where students had the chance to win red envelopes—symbolic gifts of luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. Students also learnt how to say "Happy New Year" in Mandarin, and many could be heard practising the phrase around the school for days afterward.
In addition to the assemblies, Mandarin students across all year groups also celebrated Chinese New Year through a range of creative activities such as designing dragon pop-up cards, practising calligraphy, and crafting Chinese lanterns.
The assemblies and workshops proved to be a memorable and educational experience for all, bringing the school community together in celebration of Chinese language and culture. The student-led event was a fantastic display of leadership, and its impact continues to resonate as students carry forward the spirit of the New Year.
