Year 10 and 11 Students Experience University Life at Oxford
On Tuesday, 11th February, Ms. Bailey took a group of enthusiastic Year 10 and 11 students on an exciting trip to St Anne's College at Oxford University. The visit was designed to give students a glimpse into university life and help them understand what it means to be a university student.
The journey to Oxford was an adventure in itself. Leaving behind the bustling streets of London, with landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, we travelled through scenic countryside roads, immersing ourselves in the historic atmosphere of academia.
Upon arrival, students were introduced to the different types of universities in the UK, the wide range of courses available, and the various approaches to education. They also gained insight into the unique communities that each university fosters. A highlight of the visit was a tour of the college, where students explored lecture halls, student dormitories, and common rooms—getting a true feel for university life.
After a delicious lunch in St Anne's dining hall, students attended two engaging university-style taster sessions. In the Literature session, they had the incredible opportunity to examine facsimiles of rare and historic texts, including Shakespeare’s First Folio and the Book of Kells. Many were fascinated by a facsimile edition of Macbeth, reading the text with fresh excitement and appreciating its significance as a historical literary masterpiece that remains relevant today.
The second session focused on Linguistics, where students explored child language development and the benefits of learning a new language. This interactive session sparked curiosity and encouraged thought-provoking discussions about how language shapes our understanding of the world.
Fatim said, "The trip made me realise I want to study English Language or Literature at university."
Megan explained that, "I found the Oxford trip very insightful and loved looking at the campus the old books and learning about different university options. The food was great as well!"
Whilst Tilly said, "My trip to Oxford was amazing. The staff and students were really welcoming which made it fun to be there. I now want to get a place at Oxford University! Also, the food was phenomenal!"
The trip to Oxford was an unforgettable experience, inspiring students to consider their future academic paths and opening their eyes to the possibilities that higher education offers. We look forward to more opportunities like this to inspire and motivate our students!
